Tear troughs can develop as a result of age-related changes in the orbit around the eyes. Age-related changes in the orbit around the eyes (loss of tone, loss of skin elasticity, tone and thinning of the skin) can cause the infra orbital margin to retract. This may lead to a more sunken appearance and a groove that begins at the inner corner of the eye, travels down and out across the cheek, which is commonly referred to as ‘tear troughs’, which in turn can lead to dark circles appear around the eye.
There are a range of Dermal Fillers available to help with tear trough correction. For those with larger ‘bags’ under the eyes this treatment may not be suitable. Prior to correcting the tear trough area, it may be necessary to treat any ‘crow’s feet’ with Botulinum toxin A injections, which will help the over all appearance.
The treated area can look slightly swollen for a few days and there is a small possibility of bruising. There is minimal discomfort after the procedure, with downtime being minimal.
